Soul music was synonymous with any type of music that could be felt from the heart. Most soul music artists had learned to play instruments and sing in the church. Soul music transcended the local church and placed that feeling in some of the most well-known songs ever recorded.

Do you know the history of American music? This is not politicized information. Jazz music is an art form that originated in the United States and no one argues it. Spirituals and Gospel music are United States creations. It was the “Black” people that were bound by the U.S. institution of forced Slavery who created those art forms. We can look at what is happening today and place modern music in its proper perspective. By the mid-twentieth century, we were able to 45 rpm records affect society in a different way. A people in involuntary bondage were able to create at least three genres of music in the United States. They created Spirituals, Blues, and Gospel, prior to 1865.
